DIY: Easy Tie Pants – Breezy, Comfortable and Perfect for Summer

Sewing pants might seem intimidating at first, but with this step-by-step guide, you'll be surprised how effortlessly these easy tie pants come together. No zippers, no buttons – just a bit of measuring, cutting and sewing. The result is a pair of stylish and comfortable pants perfect for beginners or anyone looking to whip up something custom and summery.

1. Measuring and Cutting

Folding and measuring fabric for waistband and pant length.

  • A – Waist circumference
  • B – Inseam length
  • C – Total pant length

Fabric width: 130–150 cm, length: 2×C. Fold the fabric into quarters, mark and cut rectangles with a curved crotch edge. Unfold the left side – these will be your pant legs.

2. Sewing and Creating Pleats

Fabric pieces aligned for crotch seam, ready to sew.

Sew the curved crotch seams together. Calculate pleat depth:

E = D – (A : 2 – 3)

D is half the width of one leg piece after cutting out the crotch curve.

Measure 11 cm from the crotch seam, then add pleat depth E. Fold and sew down the pleat for approximately 25 cm.

3. Securing the Pleats

Securing pleats – aligning and stitching the fold edges.

Fold the pleat so the fold line aligns with the earlier seam. Sew the edges of the pleat about 23 cm. Stitch the top of the pleat to the pants to make waistband sewing easier. Repeat for all four pleats (front and back on both legs).

4. Creating the Waistband

Cut fabric strips for waistband and ties.

Cut two 10 cm high fabric strips. Place the right side of the strip against the wrong side of the pants and sew 1 cm from the edge. Fold the extending end in half with right sides inside, and sew the ends at your desired angle (45° for pointed ends or 90° for straight ends). Turn the strip right side out.

5. Attaching the Waistband

Sewing waistband tie ends at an angle.

Fold the strip in half and place it on the right side of the pants. Topstitch close to the edge. Repeat on the other side.

6. Tying and Wearing

Waistband attached and tied at the sides.

Put the pants on, tie one panel from front to back, then pull the second panel through the legs and tie back to front. For thick fabrics, you can substitute ties with buttons or hook-and-eye closures.

All Done!

Finished tie pants worn and styled with front and back ties.

Your light, breathable summer pants are ready! Try different fabrics and colors – viscose, linen, or soft draping cotton. You’ll find the best selection at Abakhan stores and online.
